City La Puente is a city located in the San Gabriel Valley region of Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 44,551 at the 2010 census. The city lies approximately 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
La Puente was incorporated on August 18, 1956. The city’s motto is “The Heart of the Valley”, because of its central location in the San Gabriel Valley. The city is also home to the Hacienda Heights Improvement Association.
The city of La Puente is part of the Bassett Unified School District. The high school is La Puente High School. The town is also home to the La Puente Valley Historical Society.
The La Puente area was originally home to the Shoshonean Native American tribe. They lived in small settlements scattered throughout the valley.
In 1769, the Spanish Portola expedition came through the area on its way north to establish missions in the San Gabriel Valley. The expedition stopped in the valley for a rest and built a large cross of wood and adobe bricks. They named the area “La Puente” (The Bridge), because of the cross.
The area became part of the Rancho La Puente Mexican land grant in 1842. The rancho was eventually divided into smaller parcels, and much of the land was sold to settlers in the 1850s and 1860s.
In the early 20th century, the La Puente area was a farming community. The Valley Hunt Club, a private club for wealthy Angelenos, built a hunting lodge in the area in 1924. The lodge, known as “The Ranch House”, was used as a weekend getaway for club members.
In the 1930s, the La Puente area was subdivided and developed for housing. The City of La Puente was incorporated in 1956.
The La Puente area is home to several businesses and industries. The Hacienda Heights Improvement Association is a non-profit organization that works to improve the community. The city is also home to the La Puente Valley Historical Society.

The racial makeup of the CDP was 54.28% White, 4.57% African American, 0.84% Native American, 7.90% Asian, 0.21% Pacific Islander, 25.42% from other races, and 6.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 43.21% of the population.
There were 2,477 households, out of which 36.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.9% were married couples living together, 16.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.4% were non-families. 15.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.94. There were 16,178 families (88.5% of all households); the average family size was 3.32.
The population was spread out, with 14,413 people (26.6%) under the age of 18, 5,537 people (10.2%) aged 18 to 24, 15,154 people (28.0%) aged 25 to 44, 15,618 people (28.8%) aged 45 to 64, and 3,716 people (6.8%) who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39.3 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.8 males.
