Monrovia is the fourth oldest general law city in Los Angeles County and the L.A. Basin (after Los Angeles, Pasadena, and Anaheim), incorporated on April 24, 1887, two days before the City of Pasadena. Incorporation proceedings were initiated by prominent local citizen Alexander H. Stephens, who also became the city’s first mayor.
The city is located approximately 11 miles (18 km) northeast of downtown Los Angeles and about 30 miles (48 km) from the Pacific Ocean. It lies entirely within the San Gabriel Valley.
The original inhabitants of the San Gabriel Valley were the Tongva people, also known as the Gabrielino Indians. European settlement did not begin in earnest until 1833, when the Mexican government granted Rancho Azusa de Duarte to Andres Duarte. The ranch encompassed present day Monrovia, Duarte, Baldwin Park, and Irwindale, and extended north to the San Gabriel River.
The city of Monrovia was founded in 1887 by William E. Monroe, a railroad developer. Monroe chose the name of the city to honor President James Monroe. The city grew rapidly after the Southern Pacific Railroad built a station in 1887.
Monrovia’s early settlers were farmers and ranchers who cultivated crops such as wheat, barley, oats, hay, and peas. The city later became known for its nurseries, which supplied plants to the region’s growing agricultural industry.
