Monrovia is a city located in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in the county of Los Angeles, California, United States. The population was 36,590 at the 2010 census, down from 36,929 in 2000. Monrovia has been used as a filming location for television shows and movies.

Monrovia is the fourth oldest general law city in Los Angeles County and the L.A. Basin (after Los Angeles, Pasadena, and Anaheim), incorporated on April 24, 1887, two days before the City of Pasadena. Incorporation proceedings were initiated by prominent local citizen Alexander H. Stephens, who also became the city’s first mayor.

The city is located approximately 11 miles (18 km) northeast of downtown Los Angeles and about 30 miles (48 km) from the Pacific Ocean. It lies entirely within the San Gabriel Valley.

The original inhabitants of the San Gabriel Valley were the Tongva people, also known as the Gabrielino Indians. European settlement did not begin in earnest until 1833, when the Mexican government granted Rancho Azusa de Duarte to Andres Duarte.
