Martinez is a city in and the county seat of Contra Costa County, California, in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area. The population was 35,824 at the 2010 census. Martinez is located on the southern shore of the Suisun Bay in the San Francisco Bay Area.
In 1824, the Alhambra Valley was granted to Juan Martinez, a Spanish soldier who had served in the Peninsular War, and his wife, Juana Perez. Martinez built a adobe ranch house and called it Rancho El Alhambra. In 1849, when California became a state, the rancho became part of the new state’s land. Martinez continued to live on the rancho until his death in 1879.
In the late 19th century, the Martinez area became a hub for agriculture. The city’s canneries, sugar refineries, and other food processors were responsible for a large part of the city’s growth. Martinez is still known as the “Brickyard City” because of its many brickyards that supplied the Bay Area with bricks for many years.
The first post office opened in Martinez in 1851. The city was incorporated in 1876.
Martinez is home to the John Muir National Historic Site, which includes the John Muir House, the site of Muir’s death, and the surrounding 14 acres of fruit trees and gardens. The house is a National Historic Landmark and a California Historical Landmark.
The city is also home to the Contra Costa County Historical Society Museum, which houses a collection of artifacts pertaining to the history of Contra Costa County.
Martinez is served by the Contra Costa County Library system. The Martinez Library is the headquarters of the system and one of the busiest libraries in Contra Costa County.
