City of South El Monte is located in the San Gabriel Valley region of Los Angeles County, California, United States. The city is situated about 11 miles (18 km) southeast of downtown Los Angeles, at the confluence of the San Gabriel River and Rio Hondo in the San Gabriel Valley.
The area that would eventually become South El Monte was originally inhabited by the Tongva people for several thousand years. In the late 17th century, the area was explored by Spanish missionaries. By the early 19th century, the area was part of the Rancho Azusa de Dalton land grant. In 1852, the land was purchased by John Rowland and William Workman, two Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana landowners. The two men established the City of El Monte, which experienced rapid growth after the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1875.
In 1909, the City of South El Monte was incorporated. The city’s growth was spurred by the construction of the San Gabriel Valley Freeway (now the Long Beach Freeway) in the 1950s. The freeway created a boom in the city’s industrial sector, which led to the construction of numerous warehouses and manufacturing plants. The city’s population continued to grow throughout the second half of the 20th century, reaching a peak of nearly 40,000 in the 1980s.
Since the 1990s, the city has experienced a decline in its manufacturing base, as many factories have closed or relocated to other parts of the country.
