City Lakewood is a city located in Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 80,048. It is bordered by Long Beach on the west and south, Bellflower on the north, Cerritos on the northeast, Cypress on the east, and Hawaiian Gardens on the southeast.
Lakewood is a planned community that was incorporated in 1954. The city was originally built around Lakewood Country Club, which was founded in 1927. The club and the surrounding area were developed by the Lakewood Park Company, a subsidiary of the American Legion.
The city has a council-manager form of government, and is run by a five-member city council. The council is responsible for setting policy, approving the city budget, and appointing the city manager. The city manager is responsible for carrying out the policies of the council and for the day-to-day operation of the city.
Lakewood is a General Law city, and has a charter that gives it more flexibility in dealing with municipal affairs than other California cities. The charter was approved by the voters in 1986 and allows the city to opt out of state laws that it feels are not in the best interests of the city.

Lakewood is served by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Lakewood station. The station provides law enforcement services to the city, as well as the unincorporated communities of Willowbrook, Rossmoor, Walnut Park, and Artesia.
Lakewood is served by the Long Beach Unified School District. The city has seven elementary schools, two middle schools, two high schools, and two alternative schools.
Lakewood is home to California State University, Long Beach, one of the largest universities in the state. The university is located on the city’s west side, and has an enrollment of over 37,000 students.
