9. Union City
Union City is a city located in the San Francisco Bay Area in Alameda County, California, United States. Incorporated on January 13, 1959, covering 19.3 square miles, Union City borders Fremont on the north and Hayward on the south. The city also has a border with Newark to the east and Sunol to the west. Union City’s slogan is “The City of Achievement”.

Union City’s roots begin with the Rancho Agua Caliente, a 44,800-acre (180 km2) Mexican land grant given in 1847 by Governor Pio Pico to Jose Maria Alviso and Juan Bautista Alviso. The brothers, both soldiers in the Mexican–American War, bought the rancho in 1848. The land grant included a 1,700-acre (7 km2) parcel that is now the city’s central business district.
The Alviso brothers lost the rancho during the American Civil War when Union troops confiscated the property in 1862. A group of Union veterans purchased the rancho in 1864 and they proceeded to parcel out the land to other Union veterans. In 1868, the veterans sold the rancho to a group of developers who laid out the town of Union and subdivided the rancho. The town of Union was incorporated in 1909.
Union City’s population grew rapidly after World War II, reaching a peak of 102,000 residents in 1980. The population began to decline in the 1980s as families moved to neighboring cities in search of more affordable housing. The city’s population bottomed out at 60,000 in 2010.
The Union City Transit Center, completed in 2007, provides connections between Union City BART and AC Transit buses. The Center is also served by Amtrak California’s Capitol Corridor line.
