Windsor is a town in Sonoma County, California, United States. The town is located in the northern part of the county, north of Santa Rosa and south of Healdsburg. The population was 26,441 at the 2010 census. Windsor is located on U.S. Route 101 in the Russian River valley. The town is home to a number of wineries and is a destination for wine tourists. Windsor is also home to the Windsor Oaks Vineyards and Winery.
Windsor was founded by Hiram Lewis in 1851. The town was named after the town of Windsor in England. Lewis built the first wooden structure in Windsor, a barn he used to store his equipment and supplies. The first post office was established in 1852. In 1855, a bridge was built across the Russian River. The first school was built in 1856. In 1858, the first church was built.
The town was incorporated in 1858.
