Lafayette is a city located in Contra Costa County, in the state of California. As of the 2010 census, the city’s population was estimated to be 27,164. Lafayette is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is considered a suburb of the city of Oakland.
Lafayette was originally founded in 1847 by George and William Lafayette and was named after the French city of the same name. The city was initially developed as a ranching community and was later incorporated in 1968.
Lafayette is located in the East Bay region of the Bay Area, and is situated between the cities of Berkeley and Walnut Creek. The city is served by BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) and AC Transit bus services.
