City Twentynine Palms is a city in San Bernardino County, in the U.S. state of California. The population was 28,297 at the 2010 census. Twentynine Palms is the home of Joshua Tree National Park.
The city is located in the Mojave Desert and includes one of the world’s largest marine corps bases, the United States Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms. The city is also home to Copper Mountain College.
The city gets its name from the Joshua trees that are found in the area. The trees were so named by a Mormon settler, John C. Fremont, who saw them in 1844 while crossing the Mojave Desert on his way to California.

A mining company began operations and a town soon developed, with a population of about 1,000. The kaolin mines continued to operate until the early 1990s, when they were finally closed.
The town then reverted to its previous status as a sleepy agricultural community. However, in recent years it has begun to experience some growth as people have discovered its quiet, rural charm.
