6. Terra Linda
Terra Linda is a town in Marin County, California. The population was 11,049 at the 2010 census. Terra Linda is located 8 miles (13 km) north of San Rafael and 5 miles (8 km) south of Novato.
The town is named after a rancho in Mexico that was granted to a soldier in 1832. The soldier, Rafael María de la Terra Linda y Castro, was the son of a Spanish cavalryman who was stationed in Mexico. The rancho was originally 6,632 acres (2,686 ha), but after several subsequent owners it was reduced to 1,500 acres (607 ha).
In 1857, William A. Richardson bought the rancho and built a house on the site of the present-day Marin Art and Garden Center. Richardson was Marin County’s first sheriff and later served in the California State Assembly.
In the early 20th century, Terra Linda was a dairy ranch. The milk was delivered to San Francisco by a daily milk train.
The town began to grow in the 1950s with the construction of housing developments. The Terra Linda Recreation Center was built in 1953 and the Novato Unified School District was founded in 1956.
Terra Linda is home to several parks, including the McInnis Park, which features a 27-hole golf course, and the Marin Art and Garden Center, which is a 12-acre (4.9 ha) park that includes a historic house, gardens, and an art gallery.
The town is also home to the San Rafael headquarters of the California Highway Patrol.
