Lynwood is a city located in Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 69,772. Lynwood is located near South Gate and Compton in the southern portion of the Los Angeles Basin. Incorporated in 1921, the city is named after Mrs. Lynn Wood Sessions, wife of a local dairyman, Charles Sessions. The local railroad siding and later Pacific Electric Railway station were named after the dairy. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.8 square miles (12 km2), all of it land. The 2010 United States Census reported that Lynwood had a population of 69,772. The population density was 14,415.7 people per square mile (5,557.8/km²). The racial makeup of Lynwood was 27,444 (39.4%) African American, 779 (1.1%) Native American,178 (0.3%) Asian,28 (0%) Pacific Islander, 30,825 (44.1%) from other races, 1,405 (2.0%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 63,785 persons (91.4%).

El Segundo was founded as a farmland community in 1885 by Standard Oil Company executive Charles A. Higgins. The city was named after Higgins’ second-in-command at Standard Oil, John D. Segundo.
The city grew rapidly in the early 20th century as the Southern California oil industry boomed. El Segundo became an important site for new oil fields and refineries, and the city’s population soared. The Standard Oil Refinery, now owned by ExxonMobil, was the largest oil refinery in the world at one time.
El Segundo’s location made it a prime target for enemy attacks during World War II. The city was the site of a major battle in the 1942 Battle of Los Angeles, when over 1,400 Japanese rockets and incendiary bombs were fired at the city in a failed attempt to destroy the oil refineries.
El Segundo emerged from the war unscathed, and its population continued to grow in the postwar years. The city’s aerospace industry began to take off in the 1950s, and El Segundo became home to a number of major aerospace and defense contractors.
