The county was created in 1856 from parts of Butte, Colusa, and Shasta Counties. The county is named for the City of Tehama, which was named after the nearby Tehama Native American tribe.
Tehama County is home to the Tehama County Fair, held each May in Red Bluff. The fairgrounds are also the site of the Red Bluff Round-Up, a professional rodeo held each April.
The county is home to Lassen Volcanic National Park, which includes the active volcano Mount Lassen. The park also includes the Devastated Area, an area of over 150 square miles that was destroyed by the eruption of Lassen Peak in 1915.
In 2018, the County Board of Supervisors voted to make Tehama County a Second Amendment Sanctuary County.
