Porterville is a city in Tulare County, California, United States. The population was 54,165 at the 2010 census. The city is named for Robert Porter, its founder and first postmaster.
Porterville is located in the San Joaquin Valley, at an elevation of 874 feet (267 m). It is situated in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, which lies to the east.
The city is the site of the College of the Sequoias, Porterville College, and a campus of the University of Laverne.
Porterville is served by the Porterville Municipal Airport.
The city is home to the independent minor league baseball team, the Porterville Scorpions.
The city was founded in 1882 by Robert Porter, a native of Indiana. The city originally was named Mound City, but the name was changed to Porterville when the first post office opened in 1883.
