1. Alamo

In 1824, the Alhambra Valley was granted to Ygnacio Martinez, the son of a Spanish soldier who arrived in California in 1772. Ygnacio’s grandfather, Domingo, was the sacristan at the Mission San Francisco de Asis, and his father, Antonio, served as a soldier at the Presidio of San Francisco. Martinez built the first adobe dwelling in the valley and began raising cattle and crops. By 1827, he had built a substantial adobe ranch house and an outbuilding on the site that is now downtown Martinez.
Martinez was Contra Costa County’s first postmaster, appointed in 1851. He also established the first general store in the area. In 1860, Martinez was elected to the California State Legislature, serving one term. He served as Contra Costa County’s first sheriff from 1861 to 1863.
In 1882, Martinez was the site of the county’s first jail, which was located on Alhambra Avenue. The jail was replaced in 1902 by a new facility on Escobar Street, which served as the county jail until 1965.
The first school in Martinez was built in 1851, and the first high school was established in 1895.
Martinez has a Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are cool and wet. The average annual precipitation is 21.65 inches.
The Martinez waterfront has a deep-water shipping channel, which was used extensively for shipping agricultural products, lumber, and other goods during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Joaquin Moraga built the first sawmill in the area, which he used to help build the adobe ranch house that still stands today.
The town of Moraga was incorporated in 1975. Prior to incorporation, the town was an unincorporated community in Contra Costa County. The town has a total area of 7.4 square miles (19.2 km2), of which 0.02 square miles (0.052 km2), or 0.27%, is water.
Moraga is served by the Moraga-Orinda Unified School District. The district operates six elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school, as well as a community college. The town is also home to Saint Mary’s College of California.
