5. Granada

Granada is located on U.S. Route 101 in the Salinas River Valley, about 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Salinas and about 60 miles (97 km) northwest of Paso Robles.
The first European settler in the area was James D. Sloane, who arrived in 1869 and built a adobe house on Rancho San Miguelito. The town of Granada was laid out in 1871 by Sloane and two partners, and a post office was established in 1873.
The city’s name is derived from the Spanish word for pomegranate (granada), a fruit that was grown in the area.
The 2010 United States Census reported that Granada had a population of 11,066. The racial makeup of Granada was 7,532 (67.9%) White, 102 (0.9%) African American, 209 (1.9%) Native American, 431 (3.9%) Asian, 41 (0.4%) Pacific Islander, 2,072 (18.7%) from other races, and 669 (6.1%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4,785 persons (43.3%).
As of the census of 2000, there were 10,386 people, 3,722 households, and 2,573 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,121.0 people per square mile (1,205.2/km²). There were 3,841 housing units at an average density of 1,132.8 per square mile (437.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 68.54% White, 0.72% African American, 1.81% Native American, 2.77% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 18.57% from other races, and 5.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 36.42% of the population.
There were 3,722 households out of which 41.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 17.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.8% were non-families. 21.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.21.
In the city, the population was spread out with 32.1% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 16.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females, there were 106.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,258, and the median income for a family was $39,545. Males had a median income of $31,154 versus $25,265 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,786. About 16.9% of families and 21.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 26.3% of those under age 18 and 8.4% of those age 65 or over.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 19.0% of the population.
The Census reported that 13,254 people (99.6% of the population) lived in households, 26 (0.2%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 19 (0.1%) were institutionalized.
There were 4,930 households, out of which 1,595 (32.4%) had children under the age of 18 living in them, 2,848 (57.8%) were opposite-sex married couples living together, 553 (11.2%) had a female householder with no husband present, 273 (5.5%) had a male householder with no wife present. There were 304 (6.1%) unmarried opposite-sex partnerships, and 41 (0.8%) same-sex married couples or partnerships. 1,046 households (21.1%) were made up of individuals, and 391 (7.9%) had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68. There were 3,788 families (76.4% of all households); the average family size was 3.17.
The population was spread out with 2,871 people (21.6%) under the age of 18, 837 people (6.3%) aged 18 to 24, 3,439 people (25.8%) aged 25 to 44, 4,147 people (31.1%) aged 45 to 64, and 1,205 people (9.0%) who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38.3 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.2 males.
There were 5,161 housing units at an average density of 706.7 per square mile (271.8/km2), of which 3,298 (66.9%) were owner-occupied, and 1,632 (33.1%) were occupied by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate was 1.1%; the rental vacancy rate was 5.8%. 10,208 people (77.0% of the population) lived in owner-occupied housing units and 3,046 people (22.9%) lived in rental housing units.
