Covina is a city in the San Gabriel Valley region of Los Angeles County, about 22 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The population was 47,796 at the 2010 census, up from 46,837 at the 2000 census. The city’s motto, “One Mile Square and All There”, was coined when the incorporated area of the city was only one square mile.
Covina is often confused with West Covina which is actually located to its south and west. Although the two cities are separated by only a few miles, they could not be more different. Covina began as a small ranching community in the late 1800s. The city was originally named “Covina” after the nearby City of Covina in Orange County. The name was changed to “West Covina” in 1906 when the city was annexed by the growing City of Los Angeles.
In the early 20th century, the city began to grow rapidly after the opening of the San Bernardino Freeway. The population exploded in the 1950s and 1960s, as the city became a bedroom community for the growing Los Angeles metropolitan area.

The Census reported that 40,196 people (99.1% of the population) lived in households, 247 (0.6%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 108 (0.3%) were institutionalized.
There were 11,829 households, out of which 5,416 (45.9%) had children under the age of 18 living in them, 7,010 (59.2%) were opposite-sex married couples living together, 2,085 (17.6%) had a female householder with no husband present, 865 (7.3%) had a male householder with no wife present. There were 585 (5.0%) unmarried opposite-sex partnerships, and 42 (0.4%) same-sex married couples or partnerships. 1,551 households (13.1%) were made up of individuals and 546 (4.6%) had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.38. There were 9,711 families (82.2% of all households); the average family size was 3.68.
