Vacaville is a city located in Solano County, California, United States. The city is nearly halfway between Sacramento and San Francisco on I-80. It sits within the San Francisco Bay Area, but is also about 30 miles (50 km) from the city of Napa. The population was 92,428 at the 2010 census.
Vacaville is a diverse city with a historic downtown and large outlet shopping mall. The city is home to several Regional Parks, a waterpark, and a wildlife preserve. The city has several public elementary and secondary schools, as well as a community college and a branch campus of California State University, Sacramento.
The area around what is now Vacaville was originally inhabited by the Patwin, a subgroup of the Wintun Native Americans. In 1796, the Spanish settled the area and called it Rancho Los Putos, which means “ranch of the male goats”. This name was later changed to Rancho Vacas Rojas (ranch of the red cows) and then to Rancho Vacas Rojas y Las Guijas (ranch of the red cows and the willows).
In 1851, a man named Isaac Graham bought the rancho and built the first adobe dwelling in Vacaville. The city of Vacaville was incorporated in 1852.
The city has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The average high temperature in the summer is in the mid-90s, and the average low temperature in the winter is in the mid-50s.
