Shafter is a city located in the San Joaquin Valley, in Kern County, California. The city is located 15 miles (24 km) west-northwest of Bakersfield, at an elevation of 1,207 feet (368 m). The population was 16,988 at the 2010 census, up from 12,736 at the 2000 census. The city is named for General George Shafter, a retired United States Army general who lived in the area.
Shafter was established as a rail stop in 1898 on the Southern Pacific Railroad. The city was incorporated in 1910. The first post office opened in 1898. The city has a historic downtown area, with many buildings dating back to the early 20th century. The city’s primary industries are agriculture and light manufacturing.
Shafter is home to Minter Field Airport, a general aviation airport. The city is also home to Shafter High School, the only high school in the city.
