Redondo Beach is a coastal city in Los Angeles County, California, United States, located in the South Bay region of the Greater Los Angeles area. The city is located on the Santa Monica Bay, 22 miles (35 km) southwest of downtown Los Angeles and 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Los Angeles International Airport. The 2010 census population was 66,748.
The area that is now Redondo Beach was originally part of Rancho San Pedro, a Spanish land grant from the King of Spain. The area was part of the original Rancho Sausal Redondo (“Round Ranch of the Willows”) which encompassed approximately 4,000 acres (16 km2) and was given to Juan Jose Dominguez by the Spanish Crown in 1784. Rancho Sausal Redondo extended from Playa Del Rey in the North to Redondo Creek in the south and from the Pacific Ocean in the west to Palos Verdes Hills in the east.
The first recorded owner of the rancho was Manuel Dominguez, a Spanish soldier who came to California with the Gaspar de Portolà expedition in 1769. He was granted the rancho by King Carlos III of Spain in 1784.
In 1822, three Mexican governors met to organize Alta California. The Spanish governor at that time, Don Pablo Vicente de Sola, had lost a great deal of money in the 1780s financing a failed military expedition to conquer Bolivia. To make up for his losses, the Spanish Crown granted him the land grant of Rancho Sausal Redondo.
Dominguez sold the rancho in 1823 to Don Ignacio del Valle, a Mexican army officer who had served under Sola during the expedition to Bolivia. Del Valle eventually subdivided the rancho and sold parcels to a number of American immigrants, including Isaac Williams, George Peck, George Carson, and George and John Henry Johnson.
In 1885, George Henry Williams, a California real estate developer, bought several parcels of land from the heirs of Don Ignacio del Valle, and began subdividing and selling them as building lots. He built a hotel on the beach, which he called the Redondo Beach Hotel. It was the first hotel in Redondo Beach, and it soon became a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
In 1896, the first pier was built in Redondo Beach. It was originally just a simple wooden structure, but it was soon replaced by a more elaborate iron pier. The new pier quickly became a popular spot for fishing, swimming, and other recreational activities.
Redondo Beach was officially incorporated as a city in 1911. The city continued to grow in the early 20th century, and by the mid-1920s it had become a popular seaside resort.
