Pasadena is a beautiful, historic city located in Southern California, just northeast of Los Angeles. With a population of over 141,000, Pasadena is the 18th largest city in Los Angeles County. Pasadena is known for its many cultural and scientific institutions, as well as its scenic location at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains.
Pasadena is home to the renowned Rose Bowl Stadium, which hosts the annual Rose Bowl game, as well as the Tournament of Roses Parade. Pasadena is also home to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and the Norton Simon Museum.

The original inhabitants of South Pasadena and surrounding areas were members of the Native American Hahamog-na tribe, a branch of the Tongva Nation. The Tongva name for the area that covers modern-day South Pasadena and much of Alhambra was Shevaa.
The area was part of Rancho San Pascual, a Spanish land grant from the King of Spain to Eulalia Pérez de Guillén Mariné, a soldier stationed at the San Gabriel Mission.
In 1880, the land was subdivided and sold to a real estate developer named Benjamin Franklin Eaton, who subsequently renamed it South Pasadena.

The hills are home to a number of affluent neighborhoods, including Pasadena, South Pasadena, San Marino, and La Canada Flintridge. The San Rafael Hills are also home to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a major research center for the United States government.
The northern terminus of the range is at the Foothill Freeway (Interstate 210), while the southern terminus is at the Glendale Freeway (Interstate 2). The highest point in the range is Mount Lukens, at 5,074 feet (1,547 m).
