Norwalk is a city located in southeastern Los Angeles County, California, in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The city covers an area of 16.1 square miles (41.4 km2) and is bordered by the cities of Bellflower, Cerritos, Downey, La Mirada, and Santa Fe Springs. Norwalk is a member of the Gateway Cities Council of Governments. Norwalk’s sister cities are Morelia, Michoacán, and Hermosillo, Sonora.
The 2010 United States Census reported that Norwalk had a population of 105,549. The population density was 6,542.3 people per square mile (2,531.9/km²). The racial makeup of Norwalk was 53,011 (50.3%) White, 868 (0.8%) African American, 1,459 (1.4%) Native American, 8,134 (7.7%) Asian, 172 (0.2%) Pacific Islander, 38,346 (36.2%) from other races, and 3,269 (3.1%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 79,400 persons (75.1%).
The Census reported that 102,178 people (96.9% of the population) lived in households, 2,760 (2.6%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 511 (0.5%) were institutionalized.
There were 27,844 households, out of which 14,186 (50.9%) had children under the age of 18 living in them, 16,378 (59.0%) were opposite-sex married couples living together, 5,025 (18.0%) had a female householder with no husband present, 2,290 (8.2%) had a male householder with no wife present. There were 2,019 (7.2%) unmarried opposite-sex partnerships, and 194 (0.7%) same-sex married couples or partnerships. 5,476 households (19.7%) were made up of individuals, and 2,5831 (9.2%) had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.67. There were 21,281 families (76.2% of all households); the average family size was 4.10.
The population was spread out with 26,378 people (25.0%) under the age of 18, 10,526 people (9.9%) aged 18 to 24, 28,316 people (26.8%) aged 25 to 44, 21,374 people (20.2%) aged 45 to 64, and 18,855 people (17.8%) who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34.5 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 males.
There were 29,461 housing units at an average density of 1,822.7 per square mile (701.8/km²), of which 12,371 (44.3%) were owner-occupied, and 15,473 (55.7%) were occupied by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate was 1.3%; the rental vacancy rate was 4.7%. 34,978 people (33.2% of the population) lived in owner-occupied housing units and 67,200 people (63.7%) lived in rental housing units.
