Mill Valley is located on the western and northern shores of Richardson Bay, and the eastern slopes of Mount Tamalpais. Beyond the flat coastal area and marshlands, it occupies narrow wooded canyons, mostly of second-growth redwoods, on the southeastern slopes of Mount Tamalpais. The Muir Woods National Monument is also located just outside the city limits.
The first people known to inhabit Marin County, the Coast Miwok, arrived approximately 6,000 years ago. The territory of the Coast Miwok included all of Marin County, north to Bodega Bay and southern Sonoma County. More than 600 village sites have been identified, including 14 sites in the Mill Valley area.
The Mill Creek Canyon Petroglyphs Painted Rock site near the Muir Woods entrance is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Coast Miwok numbered in the thousands before European colonization, and their population was greatly reduced by the introduction of diseases from Europe. By the 1800s, the Coast Miwok were almost completely gone, and their former territory was largely uninhabited.
In 1834, the Mexican government granted Rancho Saucelito, a Mexican land grant, to William Richardson, a British sailor who had jumped ship in San Francisco in 1822. With the cession of California to the United States following the Mexican-American War, the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo provided that the land grant be honored. Richardson settled the area which is now Mill Valley, building a sawmill and, later, a lumber mill on the Mill Creek stream.
The City of Mill Valley was incorporated in 1900.
The town has a historic downtown centered around Throckmorton Avenue, with many small shops, restaurants, and cafes. Old-fashioned ice cream parlors, a vintage movie theater, and a historic train depot add to the small town feel.
There are several parks and open spaces in Mill Valley, including Old Mill Park, which features a restored mill and pond; Mount Tamalpais State Park; and the Mill Valley Dog Park.
