Los Alamitos is a city in Orange County, California. The population was 11,449 at the 2010 census, up from 10,860 at the 2000 census. It is often mistakenly assumed to include the adjacent but unincorporated community of Rossmoor (whose population as of 2010 was 10,174), which uses Los Alamitos as its mailing address. The Los Alamitos Race Course is located in the city. The city also has the Los Alamitos Army Airfield, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The city was incorporated in March 1960. The city’s name comes from the Spanish for “the little cottonwoods” or “the little cottonwoods of the saints”, referring to the Alamitos Creek that flows through the area.
