1. La Habra Heights
La Habra Heights is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 5,325 at the 2010 census, down from 5,712 at the 2000 census. The city was incorporated on August 18, 1978. The city is served by Whittier Union High School District.
The city takes its name from the Rancho La Habra, on which it was founded. The rancho was originally granted in 1834 by Mexican Governor José Figueroa to Jose Antonio Nieto. When California was admitted into the United States, Nieto’s grandson, Jose Manuel Nieto, received the rancho from the U.S. government.
The Nieto family sold the Rancho La Habra to John T. Gano in 1884. Gano used the ranch to raise sheep and cattle. In 1925, the New York Times reported that Gano had “the finest herd of sheep in the world.”
In the late 1920s, La Habra Heights was subdivided for residential development. The original subdivision was called “The Heights” and was bounded by La Habra Boulevard on the south, Puente Street on the west, City Limit Street on the north, and Euclid Street on the east. The streets were named after the family of John Gano: Barbara, Julia, Marguerita, John, Carl, Isabel, Gertrude, and Mary.
After the subdivision was completed, La Habra Heights remained rural and undeveloped until the 1960s. In 1963, the first elementary school, La Habra Heights Elementary, was built.
In the late 1960s, developers began building large homes on large lots. The city was incorporated in 1978 in order to prevent further development.
Today, La Habra Heights is a quiet, affluent city with many large homes on large lot sizes. The city is home to two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school.
