Hanford is located near the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley, 38 miles (61 km) southwest of Fresno and about 200 miles (320 km) north of Los Angeles. The city is named after James B. Hanford, a developer and engineer.
The city has a council-manager form of government. The mayor is elected by the city council. The city council consists of five members, each elected to four-year terms. The council elects a president, who presides over city council meetings, from among its members.
