Concord is the largest city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. As of 2017, the city had a population of 129,000. The city is a major regional suburban East Bay center within the San Francisco Bay Area, and is 29 miles east of San Francisco.
Concord was founded in 1869 as the community of Todos Santos by Don Salvio Pacheco. The name was changed to Concord in 1879. The city grew rapidly in the following decades, becoming a bedroom community for San Francisco in the 1950s. It continued to grow in the following years, becoming a city in 1965.
Concord is known for its suburban feel and its many parks and open spaces. The city has a council-manager form of government.
The city’s economy is driven by retail, healthcare, and services. Top employers include John Muir Health, Kaiser Permanente, and Sleep Train.
Concord is served by the Concord BART station and the Concord Amtrak station. The city is also served by several bus lines and by the County Connection, a county-wide bus system.
