The area was originally inhabited by the Yokuts Native American tribe. In 1856, the first European settlers arrived, and the area was subsequently annexed by the United States.
The community was originally called Coaling Station A, and was established as a fueling stop for steam locomotives. The name was later changed to Coalinga Heights.
The 2010 United States Census reported that Coalinga Heights had a population of 1,631. The racial makeup of Coalinga Heights was 1,176 (72.2%) White, 24 (1.5%) African American, 40 (2.5%) Native American, 37 (2.3%) Asian, 4 (0.2%) Pacific Islander, 221 (13.5%) from other races, and 59 (3.6%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 435 persons (26.7%).
