Avenal is a city in Kings County, California, United States. The population was 11,355 at the 2010 census, up from 10,912 at the 2000 census. Avenal is located 33 miles (53 km) southwest of Hanford, at an elevation of 934 feet (285 m). It is located on State Route 33 in the San Joaquin Valley.
The city was founded in 1911 by settlers from the nearby town of Coalinga. The city’s name is derived from the Spanish word for “avenue”, a reference to the city’s tree-lined streets.
Avenal is a predominantly Hispanic city, with a large number of residents of Mexican descent. The city’s economy is based largely on agriculture, and many residents work in the nearby farms and ranches. The city is also home to a state prison, the Avenal State Prison.
