Glendora is a city located in the San Gabriel Valley in Los Angeles County, California, 23 miles (37 km) east of downtown Los Angeles. As of the 2010 census, the population of Glendora was 50,073. Known as the “Pride of the Foothills”, Glendora is an affluent city with a diverse housing stock located at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains in the San Gabriel Valley. It is bordered by Azusa to the west, San Dimas to the east and south, Covina and the unincorporated community of Charter Oak to the south, and the San Gabriel Mountains to the north.
Glendora’s history dates back to the Native American Tongva people. The San Gabriel Mission was founded nearby in 1771, and the land that is now Glendora was part of the mission’s property. In 1887, Glendora was founded on a 2,200-acre (8.9 km2) ranch owned by George D. Whitcomb, who was known for his successful cattle business. Whitcomb’s wife, Mary, named the city after her sister-in-law Glendora Boyle Crocker. The city grew rapidly in the early 20th century as part of the Southern California land boom. As a result of this growth, Glendora became the fastest-growing city in the United States at one point. It was incorporated on January 23, 1911.
The city’s growth slowed when the Great Depression began. It was again one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation during the 1950s and 1960s, but has since slowed considerably.
Glendora is home to the historic Route 66, which passes through the city on Foothill Boulevard. The city is also home to the Glendora Country Club, one of the oldest country clubs in Southern California.
Glendora is served by the Glendora Unified School District. The district includes nine elementary schools, three middle schools, and three high schools. Glendora is also home to several private schools, including AGBU Vatche & Tamar Manoukian High School, Glendora Montessori Academy, and St. Lucy’s Priory High School.
Glendora is served by two major freeways, the 210 and the 57. The city is also served by Metrolink’s Commuter Rail system, which has a station in downtown Glendora.

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,409 people, 2,867 households, and 2,258 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 5,601.6 inhabitants per square mile (2,160.2/km2). There were 2,936 housing units at an average density of 1,941.3 per square mile (750.8/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 77.61% White, 1.54% African American, 1.12% Native American, 3.46% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 11.43% from other races, and 3.66% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 25.40% of the population.
There were 2,867 households, out of which 34.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.9% were married couples living together, 11.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.4% were non-families. 16.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.92 and the average family size was 3.27.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 27.4% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.8 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $56,429, and the median income for a family was $61,817. Males had a median income of $41,875 versus $30,625 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,264. About 4.4% of families and 6.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.5% of those under age 18 and 4.0% of those age 65 or over.

East Glendora is bordered by the cities of Glendora to the west, San Dimas to the east and north, and Covina and Azusa to the south.
The 2010 United States Census reported that East Glendora had a population of 10,689. The racial makeup of East Glendora was 6,812 (63.9%) White (50.2% Non-Hispanic White), 94 (0.9%) African American, 86 (0.8%) Native American, 854 (8.0%) Asian, 20 (0.2%) Pacific Islander, 2,287 (21.4%) from other races, and 446 (4.2%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5,551 persons (51.8%).
The Census reported that 10,625 people (99.4% of the population) lived in households, 64 (0.6%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 0 (0%) were institutionalized.
There were 3,531 households, out of which 1,213 (34.2%) had children under the age of 18 living in them, 1,715 (48.6%) were opposite-sex married couples living together, 511 (14.5%) had a female householder with no husband present, 213 (6.0%) had a male householder with no wife present. There were 226 (6.4%) unmarried opposite-sex partnerships, and 29 (0.8%) same-sex married couples or partnerships. 713 households (20.2%) were made up of individuals, and 320 (9.0%) had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.01. There were 2,566 families (72.8% of all households); the average family size was 3.49.
The population was spread out, with 2,811 people (26.3%) under the age of 18, 861 people (8.1%) aged 18 to 24, 2,818 people (26.3%) aged 25 to 44, 2,969 people (27.8%) aged 45 to 64, and 1,030 people (9.6%) who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36.0 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.3 males.
There were 3,649 housing units at an average density of 889.1 per square mile (343.7/km2), of which 2,405 (68.1%) were owner-occupied, and 1,126 (31.9%) were occupied by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate was 0.9%; the rental vacancy rate was 6.0%. 7,262 people (67.8% of the population) lived in owner-occupied housing units and 3,363 people (31.6%) lived in rental housing units.
